De-Personalizing Yourself From Your Home When Selling
People often take a house and make it their home overtime. A lot of memories are usually attached to a house like your first place to live after the wedding, your first baby’s first home, your kids growing up, etc. Everyone gets used to their home and gets emotionally attached to it after a point of time because it is a place where memories are created. Selling such a place is bound to be difficult. Moving a house is an experience everyone goes through at some point or the other in their life and it is important to prepare yourself and your family for it.
The first stage of preparing for the sale involves getting detached from the house. Prep your family and let them know in advance that a move is due. This will give them time to get used to the idea of living in a new place. This applies especially to kids. This detachment process is also important in order to de-personalize your home. De-personalizing is important because you want to show potential buyers that they can make it their home. If the home looks very personal it might not appeal to the buyer if he has different taste in setting up the house. In addition to this, the buyer will not be able to picture himself living in the house because too many of your personal distractions will come in the way of his vision.
De-personalizing your home includes getting rid of everything that is personal to you. For example, take off all family photos from the walls and the showcases. In addition to this, remove everything that will give away your professional status. If you are a lawyer and have your law degree hanging on the wall, the potential buyer might get intimidated about buying the house from a lawyer and might bail. This can harm a potentially good sale. Hence, remove all degrees and other articles that can give away your profession. Also, keep your personal life to yourself. If you are getting a divorce, your buyers do not need to know about it. They will figure that you want to sell the house quickly and might quote lower prices.
